Violence in the classroom: Strategies and support for teaching assistants

We’re connecting online between 4:00pm and 4:45pm BST on 7th May. Can’t join live? Sign up anyway and we’ll share the recording.

What is the event about?

Violent and aggressive behaviour is becoming an all-too-familiar reality in UK schools. According to UNISON’s 2024 survey of almost 8,000 school support staff, nearly two-thirds (64%) witnessed violence at work in the past year, with many reporting daily incidents of verbal abuse, pushing, kicking and the throwing of objects and furniture.

As the adults often working closely with pupils presenting these behaviours, teaching assistants are frequently on the front line. Despite this, many TAs feel underprepared, with 65% saying they haven't had training on how to manage violent behaviour. Many also feel that more support is needed when incidents occur.

In this 45-minute webinar, Thrive’s Viv Trask-Hall will share practical, trauma-informed strategies to help TAs respond effectively when trying to support pupils communicating distress through behaviours like violence or aggression, prioritising the safety of everyone involved.

By the end of this webinar, you will:

- Seek to understand the feelings and experiences that may be expressed through violent or aggressive behaviour

- Have a range of effective techniques to help you stay steady when behaviour escalates

- Be equipped with practical, go-to strategies to support young people in the moment
