ON-DEMAND WEBINAR

# The Inclusion Blind Spot: What Attendance and Behaviour Data Isn't Telling You

Being in school is only part of the picture. A pupil may attend regularly and rarely appear in behaviour records, but still find it difficult to join in, ask for help or access learning. How do we understand their experience - and use it to inform our inclusion priorities?

In this 45-minute webinar, we’ll explore how school and trust leaders can bring together attendance and behaviour information, staff observations and the experiences of pupils and families to understand where participation is difficult and what could help.

We’ll draw on Thrive’s understanding of social and emotional development to look at the difference everyday routines, relationships and adult responses can make. We’ll consider moments across the school day: starting a difficult task, moving between lessons or finding a place in the playground.

We'll also explore how some pupils can remain largely invisible in school data through coping strategies such as masking, avoidance or people-pleasing. While attendance and behaviour information are important, they don't always reveal the barriers experienced by pupils who fly under the radar. We'll consider how leaders can identify these quieter signs and ensure they are reflected in their inclusion priorities.

The focus will be on what leaders can take back to their teams: choosing an area to look at more closely, agreeing a practical change and checking whether it helps.

We’ll also show how [Thrive’s Inclusion Strategy Planning Tool](https://web.thriveapproach.com/thrive-inclusive-mainstream-fund-strategy-planning-tool?hsLang=en) can help you capture what you’ve learned and turn it into planned action. The tool is available in primary, secondary, early years and post-16 settings versions.

Attendees will leave with:

- Questions to help your team explore what attendance and behaviour records might not show.
- A way to look more closely at one pupil group or part of the school day, using existing information alongside pupil, family and staff perspectives.
- Greater confidence in identifying less visible barriers to participation, including pupils whose difficulties may be hidden behind compliance, masking or avoidance.
- Practical pointers for deciding what to change, what support staff will need and how to tell whether it’s helping.
- Access to Thrive’s planning tool to support the development of your inclusion strategy.

Who it’s for: Headteachers, senior school leaders and trust leaders responsible for inclusion, education or pupil wellbeing.
